JustShare Lecture on Christian Social & Political Thought:

‘Credit crunch and custody: symbols of social dislocation’

The Rt Revd Peter Selby (Formerly Bishop of Worcester)

Chair: The Revd Dr Ed Newell, Sub Dean of Christ Church, Oxford.

We were privileged to welcome Peter Selby for a fascinating, thought-provoking and wide-ranging lecture in which he explored the relationship between our criminal justice and financial systems. He posited an obsession with speed and a lack of patience as the common link, whether in the speed of money transfers and trading or the unwillingness to invest time in rehabilitation. We were particularly grateful to Peter for coming to give his lecture when recovering from illness. It was also a very great pleasure to welcome Ed Newell back to JustShare to chair the lecture.

Wednesday 30th March at 6.05pm

JustShare Lecture on Christian Social & Political Thought:

'Strangers and Neighbours: Wealth and Poverty in the City'

The Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, former MP and Cabinet Minister

Chair: Alderman Roger Gifford, UK Head of SEB

Ann Widdecombe delivered an incisive lecture in which she argued that we tend to think about poverty as something distant, ignoring the very real poverty on our doorstep. She referred particularly to the poverty (of aspiration, leisure, education and environment as well as the more traditional poverty of income) on some of London’s estates from which Canary Wharf can be seen clearly. She suggested that the City ought to be more actively engaged in tackling the poverty in its own backyard, by, for example, running mentoring schemes and funding local community self-help groups.

Questions from the audience ranged from her views on the Robin Hood tax to  whether local community projects would survive funding cuts. Discussions continued over Fairtrade wine generously donated by La Riojana and Ann also kindly signed copies of her 4 novels which were on sale.
